பெரியார் ஈ.வெ.ரா
  • பெரியார் ஈ.வெராமசாமி (1879-1973) சுயமரியாதை இயக்கத்தை தோற்றுவித்தவர் ஆவார்.
  • பெயரளவு முறையான கல்வியைக் கற்றிருந்தாலும் தன்தந்தையால் ஆதரிக்கப்பட்ட அறிஞர்களுடன் விமர்சன விவாதங்களில் ஈடுபடுவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
  • வைதீக இந்து சமயத்துடன் ஏற்பட்ட நேரடி அனுபவங்கள் இந்து சமயத்தின் மீது அவர் கொண்டிருந்த நம்பிக்கைகளைத் தகர்த்தன.
  • அவருடைய சுயநலமற்ற ‘பொதுச் சேவைகளும், தொலைநோக்குப் பார்வையும் அவரை புகழ்பெற்ற ஆளுமை ஆக்கின.
  • ஈரோட்டின் நகரசபைத் தலைவர் பதவி (1918-1919) உட்பட பல பதவிகளையும் அவர் வகித்தார்.
கோவில் நுழைவு உரிமை
  • தமிழ்நாடு காங்கிரஸ் கமிட்டியின் தலைவராக பெரியார் பதவி வகித்தபோது ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட மக்களின் கோவில் நுழைவு உரிமை குறித்த தீர்மானம் ஒன்றை முன்மொழிந்தார்.
  • சாதி தர்மம் என்ற பெயரில் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட பிரிவுகளைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் கோவிலுக்குள் நுழைவதை சுற்றியுள்ள வீதிகளிளும் நுழைவது. மறுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது.
வைக்கம் சத்யாகிரஹம்
  • இப்படிப்பட்ட நடைமுறையினை வைக்கம் திருவாங்கூர் சமஸ்தானத்தின் ஒரு சுதேசி அரசு, தற்போதைய கேரள மாநிலத்திலுள்ள ஒரு நகர மக்கள் எதிர்த்தனர்.
  • எதிர்ப்பின் தொடக்கக் கட்டங்களில் மதுரையைச் சேர்ந்த ஜார்ஜ் ஜோசப் பெரும்பங்கு வகித்தார்.
  • உள்ளூர் தலைவர்கள் கைது செய்யப்பட்ட பின்னர் பெரியார் இந்த இயக்கத்திற்கு தலைமையேற்றதால் சிறையிலடைக்கப்பட்டார்.
  • மக்கள் அவரை ‘வைக்கம் வீரர்’ எனப் பாராட்டினர்.
சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம்
  • இதே சமயத்தில் சேரன்மாதேவி குருகுலப் பள்ளியில், உணவு உண்ணும் அறையில் சாதி அடிப்படையிலான பாகுபாடு நிலவுவதைக் கேள்வியுற்று மனவருத்தமடைந்தார். இக்குருகுலம்
  • தமிழ்நாடு காங்கிரஸ் கமிட்டியின் நிதியுதவியில் வ.வே. சுப்பிரமணியம் எனும் காங்கிரஸ் தலைவரால் நடத்தப் பெற்றது.
  • இதனைப் பெரியார் கண்டித்து எதிர்த்த பின்னரும், குருகுலத்தில் நடைபெறும் சாதிப்பாகுபாட்டை காங்கிரஸ் தொடர்ந்து ஆதரித்ததால் மனமுடைந்தார்.
  • பெரியார் 1925 இல் சுயமரியாதை இயக்கத்தைத் தொடங்கினார்.
செய்தித்தாள்
  • பகுத்தறிவுக் கருத்துகளை மக்களிடையே பரப்புவதில் மக்கள் தொடர்புச் சாதனங்களின் முக்கியத்துவத்தைப் பெரியார் புரிந்து கொண்டார்.
  • குடிஅரசு (1925), ரிவோல்ட் (1928), புரட்சி (1933), பகுத்தறிவு (1934), விடுதலை (1935) போன்ற பல செய்தித்தாள்களையும் இதழ்களையும் ‘பெரியார். தொடங்கினார்.
  • சுயமரியாதை இயக்கத்தின் அதிகாரபூர்வ செய்தித்தாள் குடிஅரசு ஆகும்.
  • ஒவ்வொரு இதழிலும் சமூகம் பிரச்சனைகள் தொடர்பான கருத்துகளைப் பெரியார் வழக்கமான கட்டுரையாக எழுதினார்.
  • அவ்வப்போது சித்திரபுத்திரன் என்ற புனைப் பெயரில் கட்டுரைகளை எழுதினார்.
  • பௌத்த தென்னிந்தியாவின் முன்னோடியும், முதல் பொதுவுடமைவாதியுமான சிங்காரவேலருடன் நெருக்கமான உறவு கொண்டிருந்தார்.
  • R. அம்பேத்கார் எழுதிய சாதி ஒழிப்பு (Anmihilation of caste) எனும் நூலை, அந்நூல் வெளிவந்தவுடன் 1936இல் தமிழில் பதிப்பித்தார்.
  • R.அம்பேத்கார் அவர்களின் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கான தனித்தேர்தல் தொகுதிக் கோரிக்கையை பெரியாரும் ஆதரித்தார்.
இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் போராட்டம் 
  • 1937இல் இராஜாஜியின் தலைமையிலான அரசின் செயல்பாட்டினை எதிர்க்கும் விதமாக, பள்ளிகளில் இந்தியைக் கட்டாயப் பாடமாக அறிமுகம் செய்ததற்கு எதிராகப் பெரியார் மக்கள் செல்வாக்கு பெற்ற இயக்கத்தை நடத்தினார்.
  • இந்தி எதிர்ப்புப் போராட்டமானது (1937-39) தமிழ்நாட்டு அரசியலில் மிக பெரும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியது.
  • இந்தப் போராட்டத்துக்காக பெரியார். சிறையில் அடைக்கப்பட்டார். பெரியார் சிறையில் இருந்தபோதே நீதிக்கட்சியின் தலைவராக தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டார்.
  • இதன் பின்னர் நீதிக்கட்சி சுயமரியாதை இயக்கத்துடன் இணைந்தது. அதற்கு 1944இல் திராவிடர் கழகம் (திக) எனப் புதுப்பெயர் சூட்டப்பெற்றது.
குலக்கல்வித் திட்டம்
  • சென்னை மாநிலத்தின் முதலமைச்சராக இருந்த இராஜாஜி (1952-54) பள்ளிக் குழந்தைகளுக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்திய தொழில் கல்வி பயிற்சித் திட்டமானது மாணவர்களுக்கு அவர்களின் தந்தையர்கள் செய்து வந்த தொழில்களில் பயிற்சியளிப்பதாக அமைந்தது.
  • இதை குலக்கல்வித் திட்டம் (சாதியை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட கல்வி முறை) என விமர்சித்த பெரியார் இத்திட்டத்தை முழுமையாக எதிர்த்தார்.
  • இதற்கு எதிராக பெரியார் மேற்கொண்ட போராட்டங்கள் இராஜாஜியின் பதவி விலகலுக்கு இட்டுச் சென்றது.
  • கு. காமராஜ் சென்னை மாநிலத்தின் முதலமைச்சரானார்.
பெரியார், ஒரு பெண்ணியவாதி
  • பெரியார். ஆணாதிக்க சமூகத்தை விமர்சித்தார்.
  • குழந்தைத் திருமணத்தையும் தேவதாசி முறையையும் கண்டனம் செய்தார்.
  • 1929 முதல் சுயமரியாதை மாநாடுகளில், பெண்களின் மோசமான நிலை குறித்து குரல் கொடுக்கத் தொடங்கியதிலிருந்து பெண்களுக்கு விவாகரத்து பெறுவதற்கும் சொத்தில் பங்கு பெறுவதற்கும் உரிமை உண்டு என ஆணித்தரமாக வலியுறுத்தினார்.
  • திருமணம் செய்து கொடுப்பது எனும் வார்த்தைகளை மறுத்து அவர் அவை பெண்களைப் பொருட்களாக நடத்துகின்றன என்றார்.
  • அவைகளுக்கு மாற்றாக திருக்குறளில் இருந்து எடுக்கப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கைத் துணை என்ற வார்த்தையைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டினார்.
  • பெண்ணியம் குறித்து பெரியார் எழுதிய மிக முக்கியமான நூல் பெண் ஏன் அடிமையானாள்? என்பதாகும்.
  • பெண்களுக்குச் சொத்துரிமை வழங்கப்படுவது அவர்களுக்குச் சமூகத்தில் நன்மதிப்பையும், பாதுகாப்பையும் வழங்கும் என பெரியார் நம்பினார்.
  • 1989இல் தமிழக அரசு, மாற்றங்களை விரும்பிய சீர்த்திருத்தவாதிகளின் கனவை நனவாக்கும் வகையில் 1989ஆம் ஆண்டு தமிழ்நாடு வாரிசுரிமைச் சீர்திருத்த சட்டத்தை அறிமுகம் செய்தது.
  • அச்சட்டம் முன்னோர்களின் சொத்துக்களை உடைமையாகப் பெறுவதில் பெண்களுக்குச் சம உரிமை உண்டென்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்தியது.
  • முன்மாதிரியாக அமைந்த இந்தச்சட்டம் தேசிய அளவிலும் இது போன்ற சட்டங்கள் இயற்றப்படுவதற்கு அடிப்படையாக அமைந்தது.

Periyar E.V.R.
  • Periyar E.V. Ramasamy (1879-1973) was the founder of the Self-Respect Movement.
  • Though possessing little formal education, he engaged in critical discussions with scholars, who used to be patronised by his devout father.
  • The firsthand experience of orthodox Hindu religion led to his disillusionment with religion.
  • He held different official positions of Erode that included the Chairmanship of Municipal Council (1918 – 1919),
  • As president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. Periyar proposed a resolution regarding the rights of “Untouchables to temple dharma” the “lower caste” people were denied access to the temples and the streets surrounding the temple.
Vaikom Sathyagraha
  • In Vaikom a town in the then Princely State of Travancore and present-day Kerala, people protested against this practice.
  • In the entry In the name of “caste initial stages, George Joseph of Madurai played a big role.
  • After the local leaders were arrested Periyar led the movement and was imprisoned. People hailed him as Vaikom Virar (Hero of Vaikom).
  • In the meantime, he was disturbed by the caste-based discrimination in the dining hall at the Cheranmadevi Gurukulam (school), which was run by V.V.Subramaniam (a Congress leader) with the financial support of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. Periyar was disappointed when, despite his objections and protests against this discrimination, Congress continued to support the iniquitous practice in the Gurukulam.
  • Periyar started the Self-Respect movement) in 1925.
  • Periyar understood the relevance of mass communication in spreading rationalist thought.
Newspapers and journals
  • He started several newspapers and journals (such as Kudi Arasu (Democracy) (1925), Revolt (Puratchi)(Revolution) (1933). Pagtdhtharivu (Rationalism) (1934), and Viduthalai (Liberation) (1935).
  • Kudi Arasu was the official newspaper of the Self-Respect Movement Usually, Periyar wrote a column expressed his opinion about social issues in each of its issues. He frequently wrote columns under the pseudonym of Chitriiputran.
  • Periyar had a close relationship with Singaravelar who is considered the first communist of south India and a pioneer of Buddhism.
  • In 1936, Periyar got Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste translated into Tamil immediately after it was written.
  • He also supported Ambedkar’s demand for separate electorates for scheduled castes.
The anti-Hindi agitation (1937-39)
  • In 1937, in opposition to the Rajaji’s government move to introduce compulsory Hindi in schools, he launched a popular movement to oppose it.
  • The anti-Hindi agitation (1937-39) had a big impact on Tamilnadu politics.
  • Periyar was imprisoned for his role in the movement.
  • When he was still in jail, Periyar was elected the president of the Justice Party.
  • Thereafter the Justice Party merged with the Self-Respect Movement.
  • It was rechristened as Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) in 1944
Kula Kalvi Thittam
  • Rajaji, the Chief Minister of Madras State (1952-54), introduced a vocational education programme that encouraged imparting school children with training in tune with their father’s occupation.
  • Periyar criticised it as Kula Kalvi Thittam (caste-based education scheme) and opposed it tooth and nail.
  • His campaigns against it led to the resignation of Rajaji.
  • Kamaraj became Chief Minister of the Madras State.
  • Periyar died at the age of ninety-four (1973). His mortal remains were buried at Periyar Tbidah Madras.
Women Empowerment
  • Periyar was critical of patriarchy.
  • He condemned child marriage and the devadasi system (institution of temple girls). Right from 1929, when the Self-respect Conferences began to voice its concern over the plight of women, Periyar had been emphasising women’s right to divorce and property.
  • Periyar objected to terms like “giving in marriage.
  • He wants it substituted by “valkaithunai,”(companion) a word for marriage taken from the Tirukkural.
  • Periyar’s most important work on this subject is Why the Woman is Enslaved
  • Periyar believed that property rights for women would provide them with a social status and protection.
  • In 1989, the Government of Tamil Nadu fulfilled the dream of radical reformers by the introduction of the Hindu Succession Tamil Nadu Amendment Act of 1989, which ensured equal rights to the ancestral property for women in inheritance.
  • This Act became a trendsetter and Jed to similar legislation at the national level.
